Depth Is Born from Attention
Most of us long for a life of depth.
Deep relationships.
A deep understanding of God.
A deep inner world.
Creative work that reflects genuine depth.
Yet depth never appears by accident.
More often than not, it is neither an inborn quality nor something that simply comes with age. Two people may live equally long lives, yet one remains on the surface while the other becomes like a deep spring, bringing renewal to everyone who comes near.
What Creates Depth?
What gives birth to this depth?
The more I reflect on it, the more I believe the answer begins with a remarkably simple gift—attention.
Not talent.
Not knowledge.
Not strength.
But attention.
We live in a world that is constantly competing for our attention. News, notifications, advertisements, anxieties, expectations, and an endless stream of information all seek, if only for a moment, to become the center of our inner world.
Without even realizing it, we have come to accept the idea that attention is merely the ability to concentrate.
But it is far more than that.
Attention is the place where a person brings their presence.
That is why attention always leaves its mark.
What we devote our attention to today quietly begins to shape who we will become tomorrow.
We Become Like What We Behold
The Apostle Paul beautifully expresses this spiritual principle:
“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
— 2 Corinthians 3:18
Transformation begins not only with what we know about God, but with what we continually allow to remain before the eyes of our hearts. As we behold the glory of the Lord, our hearts, our thoughts, and our character are gradually changed. Whatever continually receives our attention quietly begins to shape our own lives.
Love grows deeper through attention.
Friendship grows stronger through attention.
Mastery is born through attention.
Our relationship with God becomes living and vibrant through attention.
Where Roots Begin to Grow
Depth is never born in haste.
It is born where a person remains long enough to move beyond merely looking and begins to truly see.
At that moment, attention ceases to be merely an act of the mind.
It becomes the soil in which roots begin to grow.
Where Is Our Attention Directed?
Yet an even more important question arises.
If depth is born from attention, what are we giving our attention to?
Because attention alone does not determine the quality of our lives.
It merely opens the door.
What truly matters is the source toward which our attention is directed.
And perhaps it is this very question that determines the flavor of the fruit our lives will bear.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
— Proverbs 4:23
